Gabriel Faure and Alphonse Hasselmans shared a unique artistic collaboration during the years they both taught at the Paris Conservatoire. Faure dedicated his "Impromptu" to Hasselmans, who actually might have had a hand in finishing it in time for use as an examination piece for his 1904 harp class.
Both Faure and Hasselmans turned to Romantic literature for inspiration; Hasselmans to Goethe's novel "Mignon"; Faure, the poetry of Paul Verlaine's "La Bonne Chanson." Hasselman's student Marcel Tournier carried on the tradition, although strongly influenced by the Impressionism of Debussy.
For this solo recital of French music Ms. Mitchell has carefully chosen representative works which show the harp's ability to convey poetic ideas within a filigree of color and texture. The result is a disc that is as rewarding upon intent listening as it is for providing restful ambient music.
